Segway Recall

Just one day after the recall was announced, I phoned Segway and was told that the serial number of my machine fell within the range of those recalled and that the closest dealer (Segway of Louisville) would be in touch with me about the update. Sure enough, David Wilson, owner, phoned me that afternoon and told me that he would have a representative from Segway in the store to update the software. Talk about quick service - I only wish other services were even half as competent and quick to reply.
I traveled to Segway of Louisville on Thursday where my machine was linked to a laptop and the software was upgraded by Regional Manager, Orlando Castillo. From reading about the recall and talking with Mr. Castillo, I think that the minute few instances of motor reversal that occurred, existed in such very specific conditions, such that due to my physical limitation, I couldn't possible make happen even if I wanted to. It does make me feel good that Segway is as concerned about safety as they are. Nice experience!

Hong Kong Visitors

A delegation of 43 teachers/school administrators from Hong Kong spent several days in Scott County last week. They were touring our school system as a part of the Invitational Schools program, one which I was associated with while I was working as an elementary school principal. They attended a Saturday evening barbecue near my daughters house (Mike, her husband, and of course my son-in-law, is an assistant principal at Scott County High School), and afterwards walked the short distance to my daughters house for dessert. They gathered around my daughters' piano for a group sing after they ate. It was quite moving to hear 'Amazing Grace' sung in their native language.
They seemed to enjoy riding the Segway very much. As with our prior European adventures the Segway greatly helped to transcend any cultural barrier. Fun in any language is fun. When I asked them if they had seen any in Hong Kong, they replied that they had, but the Segway was not to be used on the streets due to the heavy traffic and sometimes very narrow streets. Seems a shame because that might be one answer to their overcrowded urban byways.

Scott County Park Fun

Last week we had two of the grandkids for the day and we ventured out to the Scott County Park and took a McDonald's (hey, the grandkids picked the place) lunch and had some playtime fun. Pushing Lil' Miss Priss (aka AnnMarie) in the swings provided both of us a good time - her by getting to swing high and me with a typical grandpa experience. The way I look at it is that I'm just as 'normal' as any other grandpa, except I use a Segway. Great fun!
