1st Tomato of the Season

Well, there are few things Segwayman likes to do as much as riding the Segway, and one of them happens to be to eat homegrown tomatoes. The first tomato of the season was picked Monday afternoon and promptly devoured (whetting my appetite for others). My little buddy is my chief tomato picker (cheaper than foreign labor). It was a very early variety (Fourth of July) and rather small, but delicious (they make great additions to a salad or eaten as a snack). Note the Segway in the foreground. It is now being used to transport me around the yard every day, for the short time I can stay out if it's very warm, in order to weed and water plants. I still seem to be finding new uses for it. It's truly an amazing machine (bet I've said that before). Thanks again Dean Kayman.

Land Between the Lakes

Last week we traveled with two of the grand-kids to the Land Between the Lakes area in western Kentucky. We stayed at the Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Lodge. We traveled to see the Buffalo Prairie where we saw a herd of buffalo and several elk along with some wild turkeys. One of the favorite places the kids liked was the lodge swimming pool.

We ate at nearby Patti's 1880 Settlement restaurant. It was so good that we ate there both nights. The pork chops were either 1 inch or 2 inches thick and are very tender. Best pork chops I've ever had. The pies were piled high with meringue. Wanda and I split a piece of coconut pie while the kids had ice cream. Patti's is listed as the top rated restaurant in Kentucky in several publications. I might be able to validate that.

Patti's is not only a very good restaurant but the settlement area around the eatery contains much to do. There are several shops, a playground area, remote control boats, animals and several other activities available. The kids loved it - especially the remote control boats.

Salato Wildlife Center

Saturday, June 3 we had a picnic outing at the Salato Wildlife Center in Frankfort, Kentucky. The Wildlife Center features exhibits of Kentuky wildlife and a zoolike display of animals in their natural habitat. We took our own wildlife with us in the form of our three grandkids. They really aren't wild - they take after their Grandpa.

The Segway, as seen in this picture, wasn't even challanged during our short trek through the woods.

We had a picnic lunch while the geese kept trying to get free handouts. Lil' Rascal finally took off and chased one across the hill before his Mum could catch him. That was one funny sight - Sam chasing the goose, which was honking loudly and wildly flapping its wings in its frantic quest to get away, with Mum bringing up the rear in an effort to apprehend Sam. All ended well however - the goose finally got away and Mum nabbed Sam.
